Volkswagen “ID. 1” tipped to launch as marque’s cheapest EV yet

Volkswagen recently announced that it intends to take the sub-€25,000 (~US$27,000) segment of the car market by storm with the new ID. 2all. However, the company is now rumored to have an even cheaper electric vehicle (EV) in the works. The ‘entry-level ID’ is said to launch with a new platform and a super-compact build.

Volkswagen has unveiled the ID. 2all as a new way to get up to 450 kilometers (km, or ~280 miles) of WLTP range and a 166 kilowatt (kW, or 226 horsepower) output out of the same modular electric drive (MEB) platform as other cars such as the ID.4 or ID.7 for €25,000 (~US$27,000) or less. Now, however, there is word that the new EV for the European market may be supplanted as the most economical car of its line soon.

The ID. 2all will be offered with extras such as IQ.LIGHT, Electric Vehicle Route Planner and dual infotainment screens; however, there is no guarantee that the supposed ‘ID. 1’ will have even that level of luxury. It is believed to target a price point of “under £17,000 (~US$22,000)”.

Nevertheless, it may also be the first to rock a whole new electric drive, thought to be different from that developed for the Cupra Raval. The putative ID. 1 is also projected to be a very small car (possibly even more compact than the Golf-inspired ID. 2all) – hopefully, that might point to more of an e-UP successor than another Fiat Topolino.
